Song poet - reveler Liu Yong (Qi-ching) loves the songwriter Xie Tianxiang. Just before his departure for the exam, a new ruler arrives in Kaifeng - Qian Ke, nicknamed Persian for his thick beard. He invites his old friend Liu Yong to the feast. Liu, drunk, behaves obsessively, four times asks the ruler to take care of what is left by him. Xie. The ruler is angry, Liu reads morality. Before leaving, the poet composes poems for his beloved.

Servant Qian Ke reads him a new poem by Liu Yong. It contains the hieroglyph "ke", which is part of the name Qian Ke. This can be interpreted as a deliberate insult. Qian calls Xie Tian-xiang and tells her to complete the poem. If she pronounces his name, he will punish her with sticks and thereby make it impossible for Liu Yong to communicate with her. But Xie on the move replaces the forbidden character and all the others rhyming with it. Struck by her talent, Qian invites her to become a concubine. She remembers Liu Yong, but does not dare to refuse.

Three years have passed. Xie lives in the ruler’s house, but does not see him at all. Two maids come, pity her, who fell into an incomprehensible disfavor. Women go to play dice. Someone is touching Xie with a stick. She scolds, but it turns out that it is the ruler himself. In punishment, she has to compose a poem.The ruler is again satisfied and promises to arrange a real wedding in a couple of days.

Liu Yong became a chuangyuan and with an honorary escort passes by Qian’s house (which he is offended by Xie). He orders to bring him by force. They also call Xie Tian-xiang. Everything turns out here: the ruler took it from the despicable class and the shore for three years for one Liu Yong, making sure that Xie was a worthy friend of his. She leaves for the home of the newly made Zhuang Yuan.
