In the newspaper "Life and Art" on October 17, 1894, the story "Lilac Bush" was published, authored by Alexander Kuprin. The story was interpreted in different ways: someone perceived love as the main theme of the work, someone believed that the search for happiness was considered the central theme. There was also a theory that Kuprin decided to simply describe his life, because he, like the main character, did not graduate from the Academy in Moscow. So, we present to your attention a summary of the story “Lilac bush”.
The main character of the work is Almazov, a poor officer who entered the Academy of the General Staff the third time and thanks to the support of his wife Verochka. Having entered, Almazov had to pass another exam - the last one, which was considered the most difficult. His task was to draw a plan of the area, which he would have done very well, if not for a small oversight. During the drawing, the officer accidentally dripped green paint, and to fix this, in the place of the green blot he painted green bushes, which, of course, were not there at all. The professor, checking the work of Almazov, said that he remembers this area very well, and did not see any bushes there. Almazov argued with the professor and assured him that there were still green bushes. The stupid boss promised Almazov that tomorrow he would go to this very place and check if they were there.
Entering home, the wife suspected something was amiss and began to question what had happened. With a sad look, the husband told everything and finally hung his head, because nothing can be changed. But resourceful wife Verochka didn’t think so, she jumped up and said: “If I already told a lie, then I need to correct it.” Verochka had precious jewelry, which she decided to sell and help her husband out without remorse. Having received twenty rubles, the wife hired gardeners and asked them to plant lilac bushes in the very place of the drawing, where her husband put a blot. The next day, Verochka could not find a place for herself, she was worried about how everything would go. She went out to meet her husband and, by his cheerful walk, she realized that everything ended well.
The main theme of the work is still love and sacrifice. Verochka had no difficulty parting with her precious things, although it was hard for the girl. The thing is that love for her husband was much stronger than material things.
