(336 words) It happens that people have distorted ideas about reality. When we come to them for advice, ask for opinions, ask for help, they speak and act as if they are not here and not with us, but in their imaginary world. A person who behaves this way is “floating in the clouds,” that is, immersed in fantasy and divorced from real life. To reveal the meaning of this expression in more detail, I will give examples.
In the novel “Oblomov” by I. A. Goncharov, Ilya Ilyich only does what lies on the couch and reflects on what would be good to do today or in the near future. But he does nothing and is waiting for his friend to do everything for him if possible. The hero shifts even ordinary household duties to Zakhar: he does not get up, does not dress, does not take care of himself. He also left his personal life to chance, never having understood financial matters. It is much more pleasant for a lazy gentleman to dream of life than to really live, therefore his most faithful characteristic will be “floating in the clouds”.
In the novel of the same author, Ordinary History, Alexander came to a big city to do creative work. However, the young man was infantile and pampered, so he did not think at all about the practical side of the issue. He did not think about money, about his situation, about the need to support his mother. It seems that he relied in everything on his uncle and his kindred feelings, and he did not plan to achieve a good position. Amorous affairs with Nadenka worried him much more than service, and he was even surprised why Pyotr Aduev did not support his undertakings, but only let go of gross ridicule at his expense. But this was just a logical explanation: Alexander was only interested in the illusory probability of success, he was absorbed in dreams of love and recognition, so we can say that this person was in the clouds, and not lived.
Thus, when people do not want to face the truth and hide from it in fantasies, not manifesting themselves in real life and not taking responsibility, they say about them: “They are in the clouds.” They are too far from reality with its problems, which in the meantime are in dire need of a solution.
