(594 words) Before the eyes of the reader is the estate of Ivan Petrovich Berestov. His youth passed in the guard, the resignation brought the hero to the village. There, Ivan Petrovich rebuilt the house and acquired a cloth factory, which increased his income. All neighbors respected him, except for Grigory Ivanovich of Murom.
Grigory Ivanovich led a wasteful lifestyle to the village. Like his neighbor, he was an early widower. Muromsky and in the village did not skimp on excesses, respecting all the English in his house. Even in governesses to his daughter, he hired an Englishwoman. And Ivan Petrovich became a dark provincial for him.
The son of Alexei arrived at the estate to Berestov. He was educated and wanted to enlist in the military. He did not want to spend his life "bending over over office papers." Local young ladies went crazy with the master, but he was not interested in them.
Further, the author indulges in thoughts about the beauty of district girls. These young ladies are good because they brought up books and nature.
Let's go back to Alexey. He also continued to make a lasting impression on the ladies. He appeared before them a gloomy stranger, a hero of romance novels. Lisa, daughter of Murom, was also fascinated by Berestov. Frisky beauty enthralled her father and horrified the English governess. Lisa had a servant Nastya, they were friends. She said that Alex is amazingly beautiful. He even played burners with simple peasants. From this story, the heart of young Lisa was even more flamed with sympathy for Alexei Berestov. The girl wants to see him, but their fathers are at enmity. Therefore, the young lady puts on a peasant outfit.
Early in the morning, the heroine went to the grove, where Alexey liked to hunt. The wait was not so long. A dog came to the girl, and soon the hunter himself. Lisa owned a peasant style of speech and introduced herself as Akulina, the daughter of a blacksmith. Alexey liked her. Berestov was about to meet with the blacksmith, but the girl stopped him. The heroine promised that she would come to the same place tomorrow.
When Lisa came home, she repeated in her thoughts the whole conversation with Berestov. She began to doubt the correctness of her decision, but was afraid to retreat. The thought that Alexei would come to the real Akulina horrified Lisa.
Young Berestov was delighted with his new friend. Even in a dream, the image of a rural beauty visited him.
The next day came. Lisa intended to stop the meeting, but Alex begged for rare dates. The girl demanded a word from Berestov that he would not look for her. It became clear that young people are in love with each other.
“One clear, cold morning” Muromsky and Berestov clashed. Muromsky’s horse was frightened by the hare and threw off the rider. Berestov came to the aid of a neighbor and invited him to his place. Enmity between them has disappeared from that day.
Grigory Ivanovich was waiting for the Berestovs to visit. When Lisa knew this, her heart sank. She must not appear before Alexei, because then the secret of Akulina will be revealed. The heroine came up with a trick to avoid this. Lisa warned her father in advance, who loved any of her pranks. Berestovs appeared. The girl appeared whitewashed to them, in a wig, which shocked the guests. Liza behaved every single person, and Alexey played the role of a gloomy young man.
The next morning, Lisa asked Alexei if he liked the lady. He described her as a "freak freak." Berestov invited his Akulina to master the letter to communicate through letters. He was surprised when the girl mastered it in three days. Their mailbox was the hollow of an old oak, and Nastya delivered letters to Lisa.
The feud of Berestov and Murom grew into a strong friendship. Newly made friends wanted to bring their children together. Alexei flatly refused to marry, but his father threatened him with the deprivation of inheritance. The young man immediately sent a letter to his Akulina, in which he proposed to marry him.
Alex went to talk with Murom, but at home there was only Lisa. Berestov was dumbfounded at the sight of her. His Akulina carefully read the letter. Alex rushed to her and began to kiss his hands. At this moment, Muromsky came, who was incredibly happy about this scene.
The denouement to the reader is clear, so the author saves him from the details.
