(257 words) The comedy begins with the news of the imminent arrival of the auditor. The news horrifies the local authorities. This is due to the fact that lawlessness and bribery reign in the city. People do not go about their business at all, they only create the appearance of their work. This is how even a city official lives, encouraging the negligence of his subordinates with his negative example. However, experienced crooks were mistaken in accepting for the checking official an ordinary young dandy who turned out to be a passage in the county. How did this happen?
Khlestakov is just in the right place at the right time. He was taken for an auditor by accident. He came from St. Petersburg and behaved rather suspiciously. The officials of the county town N. decided that this behavior was due to his dissatisfaction with the service at the local hotel, while in fact Khlestakov behaved strangely due to his lack of money. He did not have the means to pay even for housing, food and horses to go on a further trip. Therefore, he decided that suspiciousness and severity would help him to take time and continue to live on credit. But, as you know, fear has big eyes, and cunning officials fell victim to their mind, sophisticated in a lie. They measured the world on their own, and thought that Khlestakov deliberately deceives them in order to convict the unsuspecting gentlemen of the embezzlement. And the young rake just went with the flow, enjoying luck. So, being a fool, he fooled seasoned thieves and hypocrites.
At the end of the play, officials learn that Khlestakov was an ordinary guest passing by, and the real auditor had just arrived in the city and was waiting for a meeting. This news is followed by a silent scene. Perhaps this ridicule will be a lesson for unreasonable officials, but the reader can only guess about this.
